Yes, I know it is only the middle of July but I’ve already seen a few back to school sales starting up. These sales are great places to pick up some prepping supplies.

For example, Menards has backpacks for $0.99-3.99 (after rebate). While these aren’t quite as robust as a hiking pack, they’ll do the job well for bug out kits for the kids. You can’t hardly go wrong with a $4 backpack.

As we get closer to fall, you’ll see things like juice boxes and other school lunch type things go on sale. These are great for stocking up the pantry as well as putting in your various survival kits.

Of course, these sales are also great for stocking up on, well, school supplies! Notebooks, pencils, pens, all that fun stuff. I’ll admit I’m kind of an office supply junkie and love picking up these sort of items at great prices.

When you’re shopping around to stock up on prepping supplies, sometimes you need to think outside the box a bit. Pay close attention to your sale flyers and take advantage of great prices when and where you can.

  1. We stock up on hand sanitzer, tissues & lunch coolers as well as “college kid” stuff like inexpensive linens & storage containers!

  2. Fall is a great time to get camping gear on sale as well since they think it is end of season. I agree with the cheap backpacks for bug out bags for kids. I was lucky to find a small one that has a frame that turns into a camp seat.
I try to stock up on the juice boxes as well but my daughter always finds them.
I just grabbed a bunch of cans of ravioli on sale at Target for $.82 each. I plan on going back and getting more. Not only can you use it for preps but if put in a heated soup thermos it will stay hot for up to 9 hours. It’s a great way to save on lunch money. A thermos is a handy food saver when bugging out as well. If you make too much, you can always save some for later!
    Thanks for the post!

  3. It hadn’t occurred to me to give my kiddo his own bag. Might have to consider that when he gets a bit older :)

    • EVERY family member should have their own kit/bag. Even if they aren’t old enough to carry it themselves, there should be a bag containing their own supplies. For small children, the supplies could be lumped in with one of the adult kits but keeping the stuff separate even if in one bag will help keep things organized.

  4. Because of the Internet, it’s easier now than ever to shop around and find out what’s on sale where. I do that with groceries and school supplies…

    • As I always say, it pays to do your homework. I do the same thing, especially as we approach Black Friday at the end of November. Some absolutely outstanding deals to be had during those Christmas sales, IF you’re willing to battle the crowds a bit.

  5. Again, more great advice! I think peanut butter usually goes on sale around this time, too. That’s a nice thing to stock up on. ;)
