Fishing vest as a survival kit by Don H.
I found a fishing vest at a local surplus store for $5.00 and immediately thought
that it would be a great way to store small items in a grab-and-go package for any
short term (overnight) survival situation. It has 24 separate pockets of different
sizes and numerous loops. Fill the pockets with any items you may want or need.
I keep this on a hanger at the door out of my garage where I can grab it as I head
out to my truck. I’ll also take it along if I’m going off-road, just in case
something happens and I can’t get a cell phone signal to call for help at the time.
The only limit as to what you can put in the vest would be size of the item and the
overall weight of everything. As it is, it weighs less than 2 pounds. As I acquire
more items, I’ll keep filling the pockets.
My vest has the following items in it so far:
1 pack of waterproof matches
1 zip-top bag of rich pine splinters for tinder
1 pack of tissue
1 Swiss Army knife
1 P-38 style can opener
1 notebook and inkpen
1 personal size first aid kit
1 plastic case with a tube of neosporin, bandaids, aspirin and antacid tablets
1 emergency blanket
1 spray sunscreen/bug spray
2 packs of Gatorade powder
2 sticks of beef jerky
2 granola bars

That’s about what I carry in my pack
sm fishing kit, paracord, wire for snares, sewing kit, water tablets…few things in mine. I used to use this now I prefer a army belt cuz I like the canteen and cup combo I’ll give u a 7
I give you a 7, I might actually do this myself.
Photographers vests are another good option for a vest with lots of pockets of various sizes. My husband wears one everyday for work because he has to carry an assortment of small electronics parts for his job. Even with the everday abuse his tend to last many years before needing to be replaced.
