Survival – Its not about me! by Cathy S.

Survival – Its not about me! by Cathy S.

If a disaster occurs you have everything you need stored up and prepared, you are ready for anything…or are you? If you have an infant or young children then you have a lot more to think about from food, diapers, constant growth, outdoor familiarity, and support. Lets take a look at these topics

Nutritional survival with an infant is not just about the infant. The best survival food option is their mother’s milk. Breast milk is best because the only extra supplies required is enough food and water for the mother. Breast milk is great because it contains antibacterial and healing properties that will help prevent the little one from getting sick, help clean cuts and other infections, and much more. Don’t be afraid to nurse an older sibling that has been done for a while, if food is low this can keep your children alive. Older children also should learn to eat the food that is provided them, as they may not always have choices.

Until our children are potty trained it seems our life revolves around diapers. What if we could not get diapers for a while? The basic solution is cloth. Whether or not you use cloth on a daily basis you should have a few on hand for emergencies. How to cloth diaper is a very personal decision as there are so many choses, but for survival I suggest one size fits all covers and inserts that are made of a flat material for easy cleaning. Wash diapers away from your source of drinking water and try to dry outside, the sun helps disinfect.

Young children grow very quickly so have a few outfits ready near the survival pack that are larger sizes than your children currently wear. I have some sheep skin and leather material available in my bag so I can make the kids new survival shoes if they outgrow or wear out their normal shoes. It is also a good idea to keep some basic fabric around in order to make clothing.

Both children and parents should be ready to “bug out”. To help prepare the family starts with the basics of getting them out and active. Spend time as a family enjoying nature and build up to family camping and backpacking trips. This time will always be treasured and will build incredible skills and character into your children.

Children are great blessing, but can be a lot of work and require extra preparation. It is always easier with an extra set of hands. Do you know other families or individuals who you can stick with? This might be neighbors or the people who watch them if something should happen to you. With so much to think about we should talk to other parents to share ideas, support and look out for each other.

Prepare, our children are worth it!
